This patient has good reserves of hair in the donor area.
Thanks to the development of current state-of-the-art techniques, natural,
life-long hair restoration is now available for both men and women. Hair
transplantation involves planting very small grafts into the bald or thinning
"area(s)" of the scalp. Hair is genetically different according to its
location on the scalp. Hair at the back and sides of the scalp is permanent
because it is not affected by male hormones.
Hair transplantation involves removing a strip of permanent hair-bearing skin
from the back or sides of the scalp (donor area). Using various techniques,
the strip is then dissected into micrografts (1 to 2 hairs per graft) or into
follicular unit grafts (1 to 4 hairs per grafts) or into
Multi Unit Grafts (2
to 6 hairs per grafts). The dissection of the grafts is customized to satisfy
the specific needs of the patients.
These grafts are then meticulously planted into the bald or thinning area of the
scalp (recipient area). The micrografts (1 or 2 hairs per graft) ensure that the
hairline looks completely natural. This process is known as 'self grafting' because
the transplanted hair is always accepted in the recipient area. There is no possibility
of rejection. At present it is not possible to transfer hair from one patient to
another as it would be rejected as a foreign body.
The procedure is done under
local anaesthetic. Local anaesthesia is unpleasant but
doesn't last very long (a few seconds at the back of the head and the same on top).
The area then remains numb for three hours. Patients can return home after a few
hours of post-operative supervision.
